Go Back One Step

Completed January 2012.

The French Institute Leopold Sedar Senghor located in the heart of the city of Dakar, Senegal, is a cultural hub where art; dance, cinema and literature interact.
The site is characterised by the presence of a listed building from the colonial era and a lush garden.

Integrated between the open air theatre and the garden, the Pavilion is designed to suit the needs of performing and exhibiting artists. The plan is divided into two spaces - the backstage - and the small exhibition area.

Adapting a number of recurring elements from the cultural and physical characteristics of the existing site's context (colonnade, vegetal patterns, materiality) the design brings these elements within a distorted volume which, by opposition, reinforces the integration of the building into its context.
